Time for DRM trials in the US?

Can all-digital band rescue AM radio?

Digital radio broadcasts were once floated by supporters as a way to "save" traditional radio from competing technologies such as iPods and the like. Whether radio needs saving - and whether technology rather than programming can save it - is up for debate.

Regardless, we now have digital radio.

DRM+ trial in Brazil

The technical support and equipment for the trial in Brazil was provided by RFmondial, Fraunhofer, Nautel and the University of Hannover who set up the equipment.

The test demonstrated a very low power simulcast setup with a DRM+ 4W transmitter alongside a 25W FM transmitter, both with quite a low antenna. Community radios in Brazil are only permitted to cover a radius of 1 km. In addition to the live program of Líder FM, text messages and the News service Journaline were also transmitted.

DRM Consortium will be at Brazilian Radio Congress

The DRM Consortium will attend and exhibit at the 26th ABERT Congress in Brasilia (19-22 June) in order to showcase the developments and full potential of the DRM standard, now fully recommended by ITU for both AM (DRM30) and VHF (DRM+). Consortium members will present equipment, receivers and latest information on DRM+ trials at booth 16.

Launched first software DRM+ receiver that works with a simple USB dongle

This week Michael Feilen launched the first version of his DRM+ receiver thats runs in a PC in which the input DRM+ signal comes from a simple RTL2832U USB stick that costs less then U$20. Just like the Dream software for DRM30, the Wavesink SDR allows anyone to receive a DRM+ signal at low cost.

Below there is a demo made by Michael in which he transmits and receive a DRM+ signal:

There is a text describing the test:

Brazil might have 100% of its territory covered by just 4 transmitters DRM30 working in SFN

In a recent discussion at DRM Brasil mailing list, Carlos Mourato from DW de Sines, Portugal, said:

"Em times I already said in a forum that, in order to Brazil get a full coverage,
4 stations with 100kW or 200kW in SFN using DRM30. One in Belem, another in
Recife or Joao Pessoa, another in the west border in Porto Velho at Rondonia
and another in the South, Porto Alegre or around!!!... Everything in SFN and Brazil
would be covered with all the quality. Imagine how many 4kW FM transmitters
would be needed to cover all the country (including the Amazon)! This makes
